Drew's New Gym

Drew's athletics program is thriving. Seventy percent of Drew students participate in at least one sport where they build a commitment to competition, athleticism, fitness, and teamwork that helps bolster confidence, leadership, and school spirit.

Our highest priority is the growth and self-improvement of each athlete. This constant focus on the development of skills creates powerful positive results, including last year with the two-time champion BCL Central and NCS Girls Varsity Soccer team, the NCS champion Boys Varsity Soccer team, 26 all-league athletes, many individual awards, and more. Drew also earned the BCL-Central NCS League Sportsmanship Award last year.

This year, the athletics program is taking more important steps forward: we’ve added a Frosh/Soph team for basketball, our Track & Field team—which started as a club sport last spring—will begin its first season as a full league member, and most notably, our new gym within the new Booker T. Washington Community Service Center opens this month.

The Booker T. Washington Community Service Center is a 70,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility and a vision of Booker T. Washington Executive Director Patricia Scott and the board of directors more than 10 years in the making. Drew families, students, and administrators, along with the Booker T. Washington community, all participated in the complex process of planning and working with City Hall to ensure the project’s approval. Construction began in the fall of 2015 and will conclude in a few weeks.

The gym is Drew’s home gym, with our logo at center court. This 7,500 square foot space will greatly reduce the amount of travel for our volleyball, basketball, and badminton players while giving Drew athletes a court to call their own.

However, our new gym is more than that. The public-private partnership between Drew and the Booker T. Washington Community Service Center is in direct support of Drew’s mission of developing the empathy to understand the impact of one’s voice. Ths gym will solidify a vital connection to a community organization that presents Drew students with a number of service learning opportunities.

We are excited about opening the doors to the new Booker T. Washington Community Center, which also features on-site housing for transition age foster youth, a childcare facility, after-school and teen programs, Youth Radio, as well as offices for the administration. The residential component will become a model program, where transition age youth have access to support staff, mentoring opportunities, and case management.

A series of events to celebrate this milestone achievement are being planned. Stay tuned for exact dates and details!

Sincerely,
Carlos Reed
Director of Athletics
