The Year's First Global Awareness Assembly

Drew's Global Awareness program, one of many ways in which Drew connects subject-based academic skills with real life critical thinking opportunities through a variety of approaches, kicked off for the year with an extended assembly led by Social Studies teachers Dr. Grace Leslie-Waksman and Daniel Philpot, around the central question, "In a tolerant society, how do you respond to intolerance." The assembly will be followed up by small group discussions during advisory time on Friday.
Dr. Leslie-Waksman and Mr. Philpot provided an extensive historical context of various forms of intolerance and tracked recent the local, national, and global rise of white supremacy and hate speech. From there, the assembly delved into how different organizations have responded before turning the conversation to Drew and the role privilege plays in shaping the Drew community. The assembly concluded with an affirmation of Drew's norms and values of inclusion and tolerance.
