Reaction Lab

9th-graders in Dr. Luis Fernandez's Biology course acquaint themselves with the scientific method and gathering and recording data—a vital component for success in science—through a lab in which they track how the ratio of baking soda to vinegar affects the chemical reaction.
Biology is a 9th grade introductory science course in which students experience the fundamentals of the study of life. This course allows students to explore major concepts in a variety of ways, including experimental design and research projects. Topics covered include scientific skills and proper lab technique, cellular processes, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and diversity of plants and animals. Major labs include a DNA extraction, bacterial transformation, dissections, and a biodiversity study in the field. Large projects focus on biomes, human nutrition, genetic counseling, and a stop-motion mitosis project.
