Drew hosted Dr. Conchita Saucedo Martinez as our keynote speaker in honor of Latino Heritage Month, followed by a joyful Fiesta Latina organized by the affinity group Latinos Unidos. Dr. Conchita Saucedo Martinez, a San Francisco native, was recently honored on a mural in the Mission District. Dr. Saucedo Martinez’ message explored the diversity, knowledge, and depth of Latino cultures. When asked to sum up a lifetime of learning into a single sentence, Dr. Saucedo Martinez replied, “Treat everyone with kindness, no matter who they are.”
Dr. Saucedo Martinez’ address was followed by Fiesta Latina, a campus-wide celebration of Latino Heritage Month. This student-led event included activities such as Loterîa, Music, and Papel Picado in preparation for the Dia de los Muertos. Pan Dulce and fruta were available throughout the event. The Fiesta Latina ended with students — and even some teachers — swinging enthusiastically at the piñatas provided by Latinos Unidos. We look forward to continuing to center culture and identity in a variety of activities at Drew this year!
