Experience Shinrin-yoku

Faculty Sponsor: Jane Healey
Visual, Video, or Written product of personal exprience
Shinrin-yoku means bathing in the forest atmosphere, or taking in the forest through our senses. This is not active exercise like hiking or jogging. It is being in nature, connecting with it through your senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. It's a meditative practice of noticing nature and immersing oneself in the detailed observation. According to a study sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American spends 93% of his or her time indoors. The good news is that even a small amount of time in nature can have a positive impact on our health. Through guided outdoor visits, journal writing, drawing, and collecting small leaves, twigs, and other natural objects, you will develop a calmer mind and more serene soul.
