Xochi Birch

Xochi Birch started her career as a Computer Programmer in London in 1994. After working with a number of insurance companies she started developing consumer internet sites with her husband Michael in 1999. She moved back to California to build a number of community sites, which included BirthdayAlarm.com, Ringo.com, and most notably Bebo which was sold to AOL in 2008.

After selling her company in 2008, she started several companies. The most notable is in 2013, The Birches opened The Battery (www.thebatterysf.com), a social club located in the historic Jackson Square neighborhood in San Francisco. The vision for the club is to create a culture where inspiration is embraced, diverse communities come together, and egos are checked at the door.

Also, in 2014 Battery Powered was launched (www.thebatterysf.com/batterypowered), which is a non-profit for The Battery with its mission to activate generosity. Its members explore themes, learn from experts, find, and fund projects which are making society stronger. The Battery
Powered community has donated nearly $30 million in grants over the last 9 years.

In addition, Xochi has served on two non-profit boards. One is WildAid (www.wildaid.org), with a mission to end illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes, which she has served from 2011 to 2019. The other is Presidio Hill School (www.presidiohill.org) a TK-8 Independent School. She served from 2012 to 2018.

Xochi strongly supports Drew’s mission of knowing and believing in teenagers. She has experienced it firsthand, seeing her own children being supported at Drew. She has two alumni, Isabella Birch class of ’17 and Joseph Birch class of ’19 and her youngest son will be enrolled next September, Devon Birch class of ’27. Although Isabella and Joseph are two very different people, the faculty encouraged them both in different ways to flourish as learners. Isabella and Joseph both found their own passions while at Drew and Xochi would like to support that process by serving on the board.

Xochi Birch graduated from St Mary’s College of California in 1994, obtaining a B.S. in Business Administration and Economics. She married her husband and moved to London the same year.
Isabella and Joseph were born in England in 1999 and 2001. She then moved back to the bay area with her husband and children to be closer to her family in 2002. They moved to San Francisco in 2004 and later their youngest son Devon was born in 2008. Xochi’s passion is traveling, food and wine.

Drew knows and believes in teenagers. We engage each student in a process of intellectual discovery to develop an individual voice, the confidence to express it, and the empathy to understand its impact.
