Working at Drew

Drew knows and believes in teenagers. We engage each student in a process of intellectual discovery to develop an individual voice, the confidence to express it, and the empathy to understand its impact.
Drew's mission speaks to a fundamental belief in teenagers; We recognize and honor their innate gifts, talents and curiosity, and strive to develop all of them as they construct a deeper sense of self and purpose. In service of the mission, we are committed to delivering on the three essential aspects of what we believe high school should be:

Academically
Drew connects what students learn to what's important to them and how to apply that learning to impact the world in a supportive environment that will not just prepare them for college but will equip them with the skills and competencies required of a 21st century global citizen. Our work around anti-racism, equity and inclusion is central to our focus in building multicultural competencies and empathy to help build a more just world.

Socially
Drew becomes a second home for our students where they will explore their independence and feel safe and validated in a welcoming, energetic and diverse community that celebrates their individuality and interests.

Personally
Drew's faculty and staff see each student as the individual they are and encourage them to not just use but to amplify their distinct voice as they discover a newfound sense of agency to use what they learn in their life.

Why Drew?

Drew is an urban high school. This means students and staff/faculty alike are encouraged to explore the surrounding Lower Pacific Heights neighborhood. Whether it's grabbing lunch, walking around the block, or completing classwork at the park, you'll feel the presence of the Drew Community far beyond our corner of California St and Broderick St.

We support and provide Professional Development. Our mission to "engage each student in a process of intellectual discovery to develop an individual voice, the confidence to express it, and the empathy to understand its impact" is not limited to only our students. Faculty and staff have regular PD opportunities to expand their repertoires and be supported in their journey towards excellence.

  • Advising

    Each one of our faculty serves as an advisor to students to guide them through their four years at Drew. These advisories meet every week as a way of intentionally working towards personal growth, both in and outside of school.
  • DEALL

    Drew Education for Active Lifelong Learning (DEALL) is an exciting week in the spring semester that students and faculty look forward to throughout the year. Faculty design and lead a week-long program that takes learning outside the four walls of the classroom. These trips can be local or 'abroad' (i.e. Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Boston, etc.) and give teachers an opportunity to explore and share something they are passionate about with a small group of students.   • Equity & Social Impact

    Drew's inclusive community is made up of diverse people and allows every single person to show up and be their authentic selves. Equity and social impact work at Drew fosters an environment in which equity and respect for others are core and where you can show up without concern of prejudice.   • Experiential Learning

    This portion of our curriculum encourages both faculty and students to think creatively about what it means to be a Lifelong Learner. Each semester, our faculty work to design Experiential Electives (EEs) to develop different skill sets that are not typically engaged in a standard curriculum. From cooking to DJ-ing to community service, these EEs are a highlight for students and faculty alike. Click here to learn more.
