Art Award Winners!

  
Advanced Studio students have been investigating issues of social justice through learning about human trafficking in the Bay Area. To launch this unit, the class was visited by Antonia Balkanska Lavine, the director of San Francisco Collaborative against Human Trafficking (SFCAHT), who came and spoke to the class about human trafficking. SFCAHT is committed to ending human trafficking through collaboration, education, outreach, and advocacy.

Each year, SFCAHT holds a poster contest for teens to promote their mission and the importance of addressing human trafficking, and each year the Advanced Studio students participate in this competition. This important project addresses the creation of a graphic image with specific assigned text, as well as activism through art. All students go through the process of creating a poster and submitting their work and, regardless of the outcome, the experience gained in the application process builds practice and resilience, and encourages artistic risk taking. Last year, Nicholas Wong ’23 won first place and Keira Callahan ’25 won honorable mention. Nicholas’ poster was selected and placed on a muni bus this February!

Congratulations to this year’s recipients: Lailey Elliot ’24 won first place, Zax Nathanson ’23 third place, and Xiara Clayton ’23 won the special prize for the most comprehensive depiction of human trafficking! 

 

The award winners attended the Teen Power Summit and Award Ceremony on Thursday, March 2 to receive their awards.
