Drew Students Facilitate at Hawai'i Conference

Drew students co-facilitated discussions about gender, socio-economic status, race, and ethnicity at the Annual Hawai'i Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Conference.
On February 26, Drew students co-facilitated discussions about gender, socio-economic status, race, and ethnicity at the Annual Hawai'i Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Conference. This is part of Drewʻs work with the Shanti Alliance, a coalition of schools in Hawai'i, California, and Hong Kong, that develops student leadership for equity and social justice in schools,

In addition to leading the conversations, Drewʻs Shanti Alliance members attended a keynote address by Rosetta Lee, a nationally-recognized speaker, on the topic: “Interrupting with Care and Inviting Courage.” After hearing Rosettaʻs comments, they came together with students and adults from other schools, discussing topics such as interpersonal relationships, police brutality, and the place of social justice work in schools.

The conference was one of the many ways that Drewʻs Shanti Alliance students have worked towards social justice this year, including engaging with affinity groups, helping to develop Drewʻs forthcoming Equity and Inclusion commitments, and meeting with Drewʻs faculty and staff about student experience with identity. We are tremendously proud of their work and look forward to their continued growth and leadership in the school!

Drew knows and believes in teenagers. We engage each student in a process of intellectual discovery to develop an individual voice, the confidence to express it, and the empathy to understand its impact.
