280 Day: Keynote Speaker Dr. Angela Davis

For over 50 years Dr. Angela Davis has been at the center of some of the most influential and controversial social justice movements. She has been a warrior for promoting a world that responds to the interests and the needs of its people. On 280 Day (April 24th), our students had the opportunity to engage in a conversation with Dr. Davis on social justice reform, being an activist, and finding strength within ourselves to enact change.

280 Recap

In our first-ever virtual 280 Day, we celebrated the work of Dr. Angela Davis with
an invigorating and informative address from Dr. Davis, followed by a question and answer session with our students. Over 345 people signed in to hear Dr. Davis speak - with many more sharing screens. In her address, she covered issues regarding the prison industrial complex, issues with race and equity, as well as gender equality. Four of our 9th graders, Sarah M., Xiara C., Elle H., and Kate G. began our question and answer session with well-researched and drafted questions to dive deeper into the issues discussed by Dr. Davis. We are incredibly grateful to Ms. Williams, who was able to create this connection for Drew and Dr. Davis. A deeply meaningful quote to all of us at Drew, is one I am left reading over again. “I often say, it’s a wonderful time to be young because you have all the vitality and you are fighting for your future, but it’s also a great time to be old because of those of us who have been around for a while, are seeing the fruits of our labor. You will change the world!”

We closed the day with a hearty lunch cooking session with our families and then spent time discussing the topics covered in Dr. Davis' speech.

Thank you to all of those that were able to attend and participate!
