Technology

Since Drew’s new campus opened in 2001, technology has been a central concern in determining how to best educate our students—for today and for the upcoming decades. One hundred percent of Drew’s campus is covered by a wireless network, and 2006 also saw the beginning of a faculty laptop program, putting a laptop into the hands of 21 of our full-time teachers. The basement houses two digital recording spaces, both filled with cutting edge digital recording equipment and Apple computer-based software such as Final Cut Pro for film editing and ProTools for sound mixing. Laptop carts with 20 laptops each serve as mobile computer labs, while a dedicated computer lab adjacent to the library is the home of computer animation classes and also a place for students to work on assignments.

The Drew experience is about taking intellectual risks and making interesting connections; today’s technology wonderfully complements these objectives, and opens up new avenues for exploration along the way. A walk around Drew on any given school day finds group wiki projects taking place in English classes, interactive geography lessons, Math teachers digitally projecting and solving a “problem of the day,” movies and documentaries, science classes creating individual websites, and multimedia foreign language projects - all possible because of fast internet access, wireless and wired networks, digital projectors in the classroom, and laptops in the hands of teachers and students.

At any point in the day, throughout the school teachers are using technology to help students engage in a direct and interactive way with the material.”
